Breast | Augmentation

Breast enhancement or enlargement is a surgical procedure to increase the size of the breast by placing implants behind the breast tissue.  This surgery can be carried out for cosmetic or for reconstructive medical reasons e.g. to correct breast asymmetry and for breast reconstruction.

You will have a detailed consultation with one of our consultant plastic surgeons, who will discuss your desires regarding the shape and size you want to achieve.  Consultations are available in Liverpool, Ormskirk/Southport and Manchester.  We always give our patients a cooling off period and offer a free second consultation to make sure we fully answer your questions and deliver adequate information.  This is to allow you to make an informed choice.  You will have the opportunity to see the full range of implant sizes and shapes available at our clinic and decide on the size you want to achieve.

Breast augmentation, when carried out for right reasons can produce both physical and psychological benefits.  It is important that you discuss why you want this surgery with your surgeon.
A common misconception is to relate a bra “Cup Size” to the size of the implants. Your consultant plastic surgeon can use various methods to help you achieve the size you desire.

What are the alternatives?
The new procedure of enlarging breasts with your own fat is under intense investigation and we expect this to be available soon.  Strict protocols and guidelines have to be followed if this method of breast enlargement is considered.

Procedure:
Breast enlargement is carried out under General Anaesthesia in one of our partner hospitals.  A one-night stay is usually required.
The procedure involves an incision in the crease below the breast and a pocket is made to place the implant either behind the breast tissue or behind the chest wall muscle.  The incision is closed with dissolving stitches after the implant is inserted.  Dressings are applied to the wounds.

Recovery:
After the surgery, you will stay in the hospital until fully recovered from surgery.  This usually means an over night stay.  Most women are fully recovered and back to work after 2 weeks, however some may take up to four weeks. Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions about do’s and don’ts after your surgery.

After Care:
We offer a lifetime aftercare to all our patients. If you have any complication which is directly related to your surgery, we will provide, where possible, corrective treatment at no extra cost for up to 3 years after the procedure.
You will always have access to the hospital after your surgery (day or night) where advice can be given over the phone or a doctor will see you should the need arise.
You will be seen at our clinic for follow up care after the surgery and as often as required until you are fully healed.  This is included in the cost of your surgery. You will then have the option of having the implants checked on a yearly visit at our clinic at no extra charge.
We use implants which are covered by a life time guarantee for implant leak or rupture.

Risks and Complications:
All surgery carries risks and there is no substitute for a full and frank discussion with your consultant plastic surgeon.  You can read more about some of these complications by following the links on this page
