Breast reduction is a surgical procedure involving removal of excess tissue from the breast and in most cases moving the nipple to a higher position. Large breasts can cause physical and psychological discomfort to patients. When surgery is carried out to reduce the weight of the breast, it can produce relief from distressing symptoms.
Women with large breasts are suitable for this procedure if they are physically fit and psychologically stable. It is a major surgical procedure and should not be considered lightly.
The surgery is carried out in one of our partner hospitals in Liverpool or Southport / Ormskirk. The surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia and 2 night stay in hospital is usually required. Recovery from this procedure usually takes 2 to 4 weeks.
Your Consultation:
Our policy is to provide direct consultations with Consultant Plastic Surgeons. We follow the BAAPS guidelines and provide a full consultation for our patients followed by a 2 week cooling off period. We always offer a second consultation before proceeding with surgery.
Your chosen surgeon will discuss the procedure, its limitations and potential complications with you. You will also get a chance to explain your expectations from this procedure.
Procedure:
The surgery involves measuring and marking the breast prior to the surgery. Once you are asleep, the surgeon will remove the required amount of tissue from each breast and move the nipple to the new position, the breast is then sutured and dressings applied. Drains may be used and are removed before you are discharged from the hospital. The scars from this surgery are usually `anchor shaped` but can be a different shape depending of the type of breast reduction carried out.
Risks:
All surgical procedures carry risks. Risks include Haematoma, infection, lumpy or wide scars, loss of sensation, asymmetry, dog ears, loss of skin, loss of nipple, DVT and PE etc. Smokers and patients with a high BMI are at a higher risk then general population. Ideally, Smokers should stop smoking well before surgery and patients should try and achieve a healthy weight before the surgery is carried out.
After care:
Following your surgery, you will be given detailed instructions about care you need to exercise. You will have the ability to get in touch with us any time, day or night should the need arise.
We operate a lifetime aftercare policy, and you will be followed up until you are fully healed. In case there is a complication which is directly the result of your surgery, we will provide treatment, where possible, free of cost to you.
